Pompeii Exhibition at Melbourne Museum Opening Times Information
On August 24, A.D. 79, the Roman city of Pompeii was buried by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The pumice and thick volcanic ash that ended the lives of so many also encased the city in a virtual time capsule for the next 17 centuries. The city remained largely lost and forgotten until rediscovered by archaeologists in the early 1700s, resulting in Pompeii today being one of the most complete and intact archaeological sites in the world.
‘This exhibition is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Roman treasures from almost 2000 years ago,’ said Dr Patrick Greene, CEO, Museum Victoria.
The exhibition will be developed by Museum Victoria in partnership with the Soprintendenza archeologica di Pompeii, and will feature over 250 objects from daily life in Pompeii and surrounds, as well as a number of body casts.
A Day in Pompeii will be on display at Melbourne Museum from 26 June to 11 October 2009.
Melbourne Winter Masterpieces is a Victorian Government initiative and is exclusive to Melbourne, Australia.

Male Birthday Gifts and anniversary gifts...hmmm…a tough one…no way!
I remember this lady who emailed me from an Australian Navy vessel stationed in the Gulf; she wanted to get her husband a unique gift which symbolised their commitment to each other in picture form. (They had been married for a long time – a fifteenth wedding anniversary – I thought about it for a while and said to her…
“Sheryl listen, I really don’t know you well enough to be suggesting gifts like that for you and your husband…I don’t know what to say.”
Anyway, that’s the last I thought I’ve ever hear from Sheryl in the Gulf.
I admit sometimes I’m not the best sales person and should really just make up something! Why not? Because I really want our clients to think of something special. Over the past year we received more commissions from people who wanted their favourite wedding photo or image painted into a wedding portrait. The request usually came from the husband or wife; and also from the children (gift for mum and dad). See our latest examples…
The process is simple; simply send us a photograph of the image you would like painted and we will reply with a quote and suggestions. For example, some photos are looking old and faded. The artists will paint the portrait with brilliant colour and contrast…so the painting will generate a powerful energy which radiates from the portrait. Sometimes the background is plain or just plain wrong! We send the photo to our graphics department and they will suggest a background. The team will adjust the photo and digitally insert an appropriate background for you to see. We will send the image to you via email for your inspection.
