I have been asked many times to come up with good ideas for fundraising events and charity auctions over the years.

My answer has not changed over the years.

The best way is to auction or sell tickets or a product which is unique and generally unobtainable. It’s simple, really. When people are buying tickets or bidding on an charity auction it is a good opportunity to bid for something they would normally NEVER buy in everyday life.

I remember once my father came home from a school auction with about 5 signed AFL footballs. From different AFL teams. It would have cost him a fortune! I still don’t really know why he did it, he is not a collector of footballs or a sporting memorabilia fan. So he bought these footballs…why? I think because you can’t just go out and buy specially signed footballs. It’s rare and exclusive. That’s what I’m talking about! Find something that people would never buy normally but appeals to the ego.

That’s why portraits are a fantastic fundraising idea or fundraising auction item. People will buy and buy and bid up the portrait without fear of embarrassment from friends or colleagues…”It’s for a good cause” they will tell there friends…”It’s not for me…” they will mumble. We all know it is for them! In the end they will probably give it to a family member or friend…but I know many who have put the painting up in the study, it makes a great story…”Well I won it at an auction”..

Auctioning a commissioned portrait or selling tickets for a chance to win a portrait or custom photo to painting can be an exciting and unique opportunity for schools, sporting clubs and charitable groups.
