12 June 2021- The first major exhibition of Francisco Goya’s works in more than 20 years will be held at the National Gallery of Victoria from 25 June to 3 October 2021.

The  ‘Goya: Drawings from the Prado Museum’ art exhibit will feature more than 160 drawings and prints by the world-renowned artist, with 44 drawings on loan from the Prado Museum or the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. Celebrating the extraordinary imagination of one of the first truly modern artists, this exhibit is the largest group of the artist’s prints and drawings ever seen in Australia.

Goya’s works that will be presented range from bold ink drawings to delicate red chalk sketches that portray Goya’s unique insight into human nature. Aside from  fantasy and imagination, he’s most popular for his humorous and critical depictions of the Spanish society, touching on issues of social inequality, violence, ignorance, and gender relationships.

What to Watch Out For at ‘Goya: Drawings from the Prado Museum’

Goya’s works from the Prado collection combined with more than 120  art prints from his various notable print series will showcase the breadth of his art and surely captivate art enthusiasts.

Some of the highlights include works from his set of prints Los Caprichos (1797-1798), which satirised vices in Spanish society; prints from The Disasters of War (1810-1815) collection, which are based on the atrocities of the war and the famine that resulted from Napoleon’s invasion of Spain in 1808; works from the La Tauromaquia (c. 1815-1816) print series that centres on bullfighting; and some art prints from Los Disparates (c. 1815-1819) collection created during the reign of Ferdinand VII, who suppressed civil liberties and affected the lives of many intellectuals including Goya himself and his friends.
