29 May 2021- Witness the brilliance of French master painter Henri Matisse and the evolution of his art. Originally planned earlier this year, the Art Gallery of NSW will host the ‘Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris’ exhibit from 20 November 2021 to 13 March 2022.

This Sydney-exclusive art exhibit offers a unique experience and immersion in the works of one of the world’s most influential and beloved artists. In collaboration with Paris’ Centre Pompidou, the largest museum for modern art in Europe, the Art Gallery of NSW will take you on a tour to revisit six decades of  Matisse’s art.

Although the world-renowned artist’s style is distinct and instantly recognisable, you’ll see how it evolved over the course of his successful career. At Matisse: Life & Spirit, you’ll be able to trace the development of his art style from the early stage of his career as a fauvist, to the peak of his career in the middle of 1920s and 1930s, through to the cut-out artworks during the latter parts of his career.

What to Watch Out for at the ‘Matisse: Life & Spirit’ Exhibit

The exhibit will feature more than 100 artworks created by Matisse throughout his long and exceptional career. Some of the most notable works to watch out for include Le Luxe I (1907), Decorative Figure On An Ornamental Ground (1925), and the famous self-portrait in cut-out style called The Sorrow Of The King (1952).

With Matisse’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures on display, this art exhibit will be filled with vibrant colours, visual and emotional power, and dynamic energy.
