About Golden Groves Reflected
Two stands of slender trees sit either side of a pale channel of water that opens through the centre of the canvas. Their canopies are built from loose dabs of rust orange, ochre, olive and teal, thinning at the edges so the trunks read as fine dark verticals against an almost white sky. Along the near bank, warm copper and brown strokes suggest low scrub and fallen leaves. Beneath them the water carries blurred vertical reflections, the colours dragged downward and softened until the shoreline and its mirror image merge.
The overall effect is quiet and slightly misty, with edges dissolved rather than drawn. Colour does the work here: warm autumn tones held against cool grey water and a wide, empty sky.
The long horizontal shape suits a wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bed head. Its muted greys and warm rust tones work with oak and walnut timber, linen upholstery, and walls in white, stone or soft green. Pairs well with ceramics, woven baskets and simple brass or black lamps in living and dining rooms. Browse more landscape oil paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
